Nicholas Tucker says "his family has been out of food for quite some time now."
Right now as you read this, over 800 Americans in the Alaskan village of Emmonak are freezing and starving. With the early freeze of the Yukon this winter in September, they are unable to receive their shipment of fuel to heat and run power through their homes.
Besides the early frozen Yukon, Alaska Fish and Game reported a poor salmon run this winter. The village economies in the Yukon-Kushokwim delta depend on commercial king salmon fishing.
The current temperature in Emmonak is 6 degrees Farenheit, (-14 celsius) with a wind chill of -7. These people have to choose heating their homes over food.
Most of the villagers no longer don’t have enough fuel for a snow machine to get and bring home the firewood, (these people don’t have cars) they pull it home on sleds. Not sophisticated dog sleds like we see on TV. They walk the sleds home. Firewood lasts longer and you can’t keep depriving your children of food.
No one is excluded here: babies, toddlers, elderly disabled are going without food , running out of heating fuel and depending on firewood to keep them from freezing to death.
In 6 degree weather a baby, a toddler or and elderly person in a firewood only heated home could very easily die. Not to mention the fact they aren’t getting enough nourishment for their bodies to fight off disease.
Nicholas Tucker, Jr., a resident of Emmonak, wrote a detailed letter to the Bristol Bay Times outlining in detail the plight of the Emmonak people, including his own family. He included specific costs plus detailed accounts of the hardship taking place in 25 other households in the village. He interviewed these people himself. I have included the link to this article/letter below:

If you don’t have time to read the article and Mr. Tucker’s letter, it includes quotes like:
“…our 8-year old son had to go to bed hungry.”
“With 21 days left this month, we have just $440 in our account to feed all the nine people in my house.”
“His family has been out of food for quite some time now. Their one-year old child is out of milk…She almost died…she is sickly…”
“Single… with 5 children…..Right now, we can’t eat during the day, only at supper time. And, it is still not enough.”
“There are approximately 200 households of the 847 residents here. In just a day and half, I was able to reach only 25 households. …are as many as 175 more remaining silent?”
Since Mr. Tucker submitted this letter, he has had two news radio interviews. He very plainly discusses the cost of fuel, what he is doing to solve the problem and what others can do to help. Here are the audio links to these interviews.

These people need our help. I realize that many Americans have experienced financial issues – especially within the past year, but not many of us can say we are experiencing the devastation of the people of Emmonak.
I am submitting this article to encourage you to make a tax deductible donation to the Village of Emmonak. 100% of each donation goes directly to pay for Airlifted fuel.
My staff and I will receive no part of any donation. We don’t personally know these people. In fact, we are clear across the country. We just believe in helping others whenever it’s possible. Thank you for doing anything you can to assist these people, even if it’s only a small donation.
To help, please call:

Patricia: I know there are many babies and toddlers involved. The Emmonak Tribal Council or the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Emmonak would know the answer to the foster question. See the bottom of my blog post for their phone number. Their time zone is about 4 or 4.5 hours behind EST.
Thank you for your response and for caring about others.

Thanks for alerting us about this Dale. It’s amazing how much the news doesn’t tell you about – seems like they are only into what gives good rating these days. I’m going to do what I can to help these people and I hope others reading this also do the same.

I saw a bit on the news about this. Doesn’t seem like the state of Alaska cares enough about these people to help them out. That’s a shame. Isn’t Palin the governor there? Seems these are good people, just going through a rough time.

Kate. Thank you or your post. Besides making a donation, the best thing you can do is share this blog post with as many people as possible through your mailing list, facebook or any other social networking site you are a part of. If you are a part of a church or other type of organization in your community, you can share this with them via flyers, word of mouth, etc.
Maybe your business or the business you are working for could use tax deduction. If you have any other ideas or questions, email me or post a comment.
